We first discovered Ferndale by accident a couple years ago. Then, after talking with some folks at work, it turned out that there were a lot of local connections to Ferndale. A co-worker of mine is related to the owner of the Gingerbread Mansion. My boss' wife not only grew up there, but she can trace many generations of births, marriages and cemetery plots there. And then, before we knew it, we were watching Huell Howser's California's Gold at Ferndale.
We really like the Victorian, sea-side, small town feel of the place. It's a refreshing place to visit. Small lanes wind their way to the sea. Ornate, colorful store fronts are always getting a fresh coat of paint.
The town is full of beautiful churches and weathered cemeteries. Gorgeous.
Exploring main street can be a very pleasant way to relax for a couple hours.
One of our favorite shops is the blacksmith's shop and an old mercantile shop where we even discovered a Walton's game board!
But, wandering the streets and admiring the pretty houses is fun too. I hope the owners are use to strangers snapping photos of their front yards and colorful homes!
